Death and Taxes: 2007 by mibi Death and Taxes: 2007 by mibi
:pointr:Full view is absolutely necessary!:pointl:

:bulletred::bulletred::bulletred::spotlight-left:Finally! Death and Taxes: 2007 is released! :spotlight-right::bulletred::bulletred::bulletred:

What started on DeviantART 2 years ago has turned into a monolith of data. I hope you can put it to good use.

This is the federal discretionary budget. Your federal income taxes at work. You paid for part of everything in this graph whether you like it or not.

Tips on reading this graph
:bulletblue: The file is 2 megs so it might be slow loading. Another viewer is here [link]
:bulletblue: Read the center circle first.
:bulletblue: The graph is split into military funding on the right side and non-military funding on the left side, unless otherwise noted
:bulletblue: The departments on the left side are in loose clockwise alphabetical order, e.g. Agriculture, Commerce, Education, Energy...etc.
:bulletblue: Don't forget about the national debt! Its the circle so big it doesn't even fit in the box.

...

and don't forget to check out the website... www.TheBudgetGraph.com

also, for those who are interested in Social security, Medicare, Unemployment, and all that other spending...
i made a graphic just for you
:peace:

I would really like to encourage you to include Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment, etc within the main graph. I understand your reasons for not including them, but I think this would give the viewer a better perspective on our nations spending as a whole, of which the "budget" is only a part of. After all, it doesn't matter if its budget spending or entitlement spending, it still my dollar and it would be interesting to see it visulised within the same graph.

Even an inset in one of the corners, showing how the budget spending relates to the globes of entitlement spending would be very cool.

This is absolutely fascinating! I'm completely floored at 1)the amount of effort put into this project, and 2)the amount of information put into this project, and 3)how aaaaall of this information is layed out in a manner that doesn't make the page look cluttered.

Man. This is too amazing! I'm going to send an email to my political science teacher with a link to your site. I bet he'd be more than interested in this poster.

Again, this is amazing! Fantastic work!

This will inform a lot of people about how we spend our budget. If this deviation falls into the wrong hands, the enemies of diverse human life will massacre all who oppose them.

I find it interesting. One of the more sure signs of an overextended nation is the ratio of military and economic spending. Generally if you spend more than 20 percent of your nations income on the military during anytime short of a war for the survival of said nation, you're in trouble.

Thanks again for this, some great info here... I can't imagine the patience that went into putting this together. I'm especially enjoying the up/down percentages next to each item, it's interesting to see what's having more/less spent on it as time passes.

Wow, that's almost as interesting as the whole other picture! We pay more in unemployment than the entire non-military discretionary budget and more on medicare/medicaid than the entire military for example. Amazing stuff!

yes all large amounts of money... however the benefits of many of the entitlement programs are easily realized... medicare? 41 million people insured... unemployment? millions of people havent lost thier houses. but the military... the benefits from that large mass of bucks is less clear.... freedom for iraqi? ... um... id rather have my 100 billion back.

Crap, my question didn't appear! OK, basically, based on your center circle it appears that our tax spending is broken into 2 categories, one amount that can get voted on and one that can't (mandatory). You've detailed the first, but just how big is that second portion? I'd imagine that with medicare and SS in it that it can't be small. Any idea? Might be cool to show as a semi-transparent layer in the background (since its not the focus of this) as a single proportionate circle just to show how much of the budget is voted on vs. not.

Thanks
